Harbor Hospice Residence Home Care serving Muskegon, Oceana, Ottawa, and Mason counties

Poppen Hospice Residence

The Poppen Hospice Residence opened in 2005 to serve people who are terminally ill. There are fourteen private patient rooms in a facility that serves the needs of the whole family. When home care is not the best answer, when there is no one to be caregiver, when the caregiver is frail, or when medical needs are complicated, residential care is available. Hospice care surrounds the patient with the medical, emotional, and spiritual care they need. A professional team supports the family as they face the death of their loved one.

The Leila and Cyrus Poppen House Hospice Residence exemplifies the unique vision of Harbor Hospice to provide dignity for dying and hope for living. The Poppen house was designed around the pillow. When a patient is too weak to get out of bed, their experience from the bed becomes even more important. The Poppen home was designed and built from the patient’s perspective to maximize comfort in a home-like environment where visiting family can feel welcome and relaxed. It is unlike any other setting for hospice.

First, it’s not a hospital room, it’s a hospice room. Consider the beautiful views of the woods, sun-drenched windows, comfortable seating for
visitors, individual thermostats in each room, and doors wide enough for a patient bed to pass
through for a short trip to enjoy sunshine in the courtyard.

Some special features of the Poppen Hospice Residence include:

• Pain Management and Symptom Control from specially trained Physicians, Registered Nurses,  Health Aides, and Social Workers.

• Rooms are private, secure and can accommodate a loved one to stay right there with the patient.  All rooms have telephones, cable TV, individually controlled thermostats, half baths, piped-in oxygen, and outdoor views.

• Family amenities include two family rooms, a  Reflection room, screened porch, a place to shower,  and paths through the woods.

"I couldn't have asked for better care.  I will always know that the final small smile on Laurie's face will express the place in my heart that the Poppen House will always have when the story of Laurie's life is told.  Thank you is an over-used expression, but it is all I have."  Joe Dawson

Poppen Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are an essential part of the hospice residence.  They act as receptionists and are the first face you see as you enter the building.  Volunteers help cook; they are companions to patients; they help with the gardening; do hair and nails; and offer comfort to the patients and their families in whichever way it is needed.
